Speaking of ABS in the snow

Am I crazy? I was approaching a roundabout Friday in the snow storm we had here, and I downshifted from third to second gear and something NEW happened. My ABS kicked in. I’m 92.7% sure I wasn’t on the brakes yet (or if I was it was with barely any pressure), did the ABS kick in because the front wheels started to spin SLOWER than the rears, given my downshift?

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve never had that happen before. Anyone else? Or am I nuts??

Edit: 2004 Mazda3 no TC or DSC just ABS.

what kind of car? Some traction control systems can use the brakes.

Yup, downshift probably made the front tires slip, causing ABS/stability control to freak out a bit. The nannies these days can grab the brakes even when you’re not using them, it’s no longer limited to modulating your brake pedal pressure.

My Golf would grab the brakes at different corners when I made the car slide in an attempt to stop the skid. Kind of annoying when I’m trying to make it skid.

Its the newest car I’ve owned as far as tech goes, but it “only” has ABS. I can’t remember any of my older cars with ABS doing the same thing though.

You forgot to change the difficulty settings to turn off assisted braking.

I really should have left racing line on though. Stupid snow covering the lane markings...

Honestly I didn’t know what to expecting typing in “ABS IN SNOW” into GIS.

How do you know the ABS kicked in if you weren’t on the brake? Do you have a flashing light?

What year is your 3? I know our ‘04 only has ABS but I think later years got TC and stability control.

I don’t know if ours would do what yours did. I might have to borrow the car from my brother and give it a go.

ABS pumps are pretty noisy when called into action.

04 with just ABS.

yes, that’s the idea behind ABS. if it feels that some wheels have lost braking traction,. it kicks in.

Initially I would think it would look to see if the driver is actually stepping on the pedal, but on second thought brake pedal switches do fail so they probably didn’t want to rely on it.

The thing is... I don’t think I was braking. Pulling the e-brake (as I did later for some intentional OPPO) doesn’t make the ABS kick in.

car dont care. it sees something, it trys to remedy the situation, with whatever resources it has.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard mine that I can recall, just the pulsating pedal, but maybe I just never took notice.

The heard, ok, maybe I can remember hearing mine (like maybe a grinding or something) but what did you feel if you weren’t on the brake? What would it have done besides release brake pressure that wasn’t there to begin with?

The pulses reverberate through the car a bit. Felt it in the wheel and probably my feet.

It was just the combination happened so quickly (and was over just as such)I didn’t have time to react or take inventory of what just happened.

Something is fishy. I read through all the comments and I’m curious how you “felt” the ABS come on. If you weren’t on the brakes you shouldn’t have felt anything but maybe the vibrating of the ABS pump? Are you really sure your car doesn’t have any sort of stability/traction control? I thought they all did now.

Kinja'd!!! Takuro Spirit > DynamicWeight

Its a 04, it doesn’t have stability or traction control. I heard/felt it. From memory I think I felt it in the steering wheel. It was just a brief little BRRT that I don’t recall 100% if my foot was even on the brake. Pretty sure it wasn’t though.

I have an 03 Protege5, the spiritual predecessor to your car. I think you felt wheel hop. I feel it a lot at the limit in my car and it feels a bit like ABS kicking in. The ABS should light up the ABS light on the dash if that’s kicking in.

Or perhaps a chattering clutch disc.

Of course without being there it’s all conjecture.

I was into the ABS several times the past few days, the light doesn’t come on when its active.

Wheel hop is a whole ‘nother animal in this car.

Trust me, it was ABS.
